The 36th Annual Weyburn and District Untied Way Communithon is inching closer and we are continuing our look at the member agencies that benefit from the annual event, including the Weyburn Care-A-Van.

"Care-A-Van was actually started back in 1980 by the Rotary Club," said Chairperson Myron Fletcher. "Care-A-Van is set up to transport handicapped people and physically challenged people to appointments and so on."

The Care-A-Van Society currently has two vehicles; a bus with a lift for wheelchairs which primarily stays in town and a mini-van that is rented to the public and contains a ramp in the back hatch.

"We are the only publicly run service for physically challenged people in Weyburn," said Fletcher. "We still need money to run and this is where the United Way comes in. We do not solicite door to door, we don't do things like that."

He noted that the funds go to maintenance of the vehicles, fuel and wages, as they have one full time driver and two part time drivers.

He also added that they have something big in the works.

"We have started a fund to buy a new bus," he said. "Our bus is 7 years old and starting to show some wear."

Communithon runs October 20th with the Communithon Concert Jam on October 21st.
