We are down to just over a week before the Weyburn and District United Way take over the Cugnet Centre for their annual Communithon!

The event raises funds that are spread among 13 member agencies, including the Red Cross

"We provide a number of services in Weyburn," said Megan Russell, Community Outreach Co-ordinator for the Red Cross.  "We support personal disaster assistance, so when people are impacted by a small scale disaster such as a flood or a house fire, and we also provide support for larger scale emergency response within the community and do some work with emergency preparedness and anti-bullying and harassment programs"

One of their most notable events is the Red Cross Day of Pink that takes place across Saskatchewan in February. Megan noted that it's the funding that makes events like that possible.

"Most of it goes towards training our volunteers," she said. "That's something that we are really focused on. We are a volunteer driven organization and we can always use volunteers in our programs so much of the funding goes towards recruitment and training in our community"

She added that anyone interested in volunteering can go to the Red Cross website.

She closed with one final message for Weyburn residents.

"We're just really grateful for all the support that the community gives us," she said. "We hope that we are doing a good job and you understand all the good work we are doing with your funds."

Communithon runs October 19th.
