The Weyburn Police Service is participating in National Drug Drop Off month this year, the first time they have joined in the national effort.

The program is nationally supported by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, and is aimed at getting prescription medication out of the medicine cabinet,” described Deputy Chief Rod Stafford.

The program allows for residents of Weyburn to bring by unused prescription drugs in their households to the police station, to drop them off for disposal. Residents can also take the medications to their pharmacist.

“If somebody is not using a particular prescription, perhaps a family member has moved and the prescription is still in the house, this is their opportunity to bring it in and turn it over to us,” Stafford added.

The program runs throughout the month of August. It is also intended strictly for prescription drugs, and not illegal or illicit drugs. Stafford advised if you have illegal drugs such as cannabis or cocaine you wish to turn over to police, contact the Weyburn Police Service to have them pick it up for you.
