Over the course of the summer, a group of volunteers have been putting together a system of mountain bike trails in River Park.

“It’s actually been going really well,” said David Hodgkin with Weyburn Mountain Bikers. “We’ve got almost two kilometres of trail in already, and still working out the little bits and pieces on them, but it seems that the community is enjoying them as well as all us mountain bikers.”

Hodgkin pointed to recent work that has been done as an example of the efforts of the volunteers. On one off-shoot of the trail, the route is downhill. For safety, and to help those riding the course to maintain speed, berms were installed. Eight volunteers came out to construct the berms.

The trails are open to anyone who wants to utilize them. Hodgkin explained there is no need for special equipment, or specialized bikes, although the 12-speed touring bikes many remember from their youth may not be quite up to par on the course, thanks to the tires.

“As far as riding our trails, anything with a knobby tire would get you through just fine,” added Hodgkin. “You don’t need anything to fancy, we don’t have anything that’s too hard to ride and anything that might be too bumpy is easy to get around as well.”

He reiterated that no gas-powered vehicles are allowed on the course. It is for bicycles only.

The mountain bike trail can be accessed near the toboggan hill in River Park. This is the first set of trails to be built by the Weyburn Mountain Bikers, and they hope to be able to build more trails in the city, depending on the usage of the current system.
