Winter weights are now in effect on highways across much of Saskatchewan, with the exception of the southwest.

The winter weights are an initiative to help get goods to out of the province using the highways, according to Steve Shaheen with the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure. While most shipping happens on the primary highways, the secondary highways can be used to move heavier loads in the winter. This is due to the roadbed freezing, and then having the same strength as the primary weight highways.

The winter weights are weather dependent, typically starting in the middle of November, and are removed by March 15th at the latest, although, they may be removed sooner depending on the temperatures.

You can check the status of the winter weights on the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure website.
