The Weyburn Young Fellows is continuing the tradition by sponsoring free public skating for another winter. The service group presented the City of Weyburn with a cheque for $2,000 yesterday, making it possible for anyone to learn how to skate, to brush up on their skills, or just to enjoy some ice time as a family indoors.

“The Young Fellows donated $2,000 to the Leisure Services Department with the City of Weyburn to go towards free public skating for the entire community to take part in,” said Andrew Crowe, Director of Leisure Services.

Free ice time is available at Jubilee Park as well as on Gordon Miles Place in Weyburn. However, the rinks are both outdoors.

“You can’t beat indoor skating, right?” posed Crowe. “You’re in a controlled environment, it makes it much more enjoyable for somebody learning to skate. You don’t have to go out on a minus 40-degree day, you get to enjoy the indoors.”

Crowe said the free skating time enables anyone, regardless of their income or skill level, to enjoy the ice with family or friends.

“The free skating that the Young Fellows provides, really, is a great opportunity for families to come out and get some recreational time as a family, which is sometimes tough, and obviously, it’s free, so it’s very inclusive for everybody in the community,” he said.

The Young Fellows-sponsored free public skate runs until March, Sunday afternoons from 2:45 to 4:45 p.m. at the Tom Zandee Sports Arena.

Also until March, the City of Weyburn also sponsors free skating every Monday through Friday afternoon from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. at the Tom Zandee Sports Arena. Children six and under are allowed to have a stick and puck during this time.
