Anyone who has ventured down by the Souris River under the Government Road bridge may have noticed holes in the frozen river.

On Sunday the city placed safety cones around the holes, which are located under and just west of the bridge.

The City’s Public Works department is currently trying to determine if holes in the ice have anything to do with infrastructure. In a statement to Discover Weyburn News, the City said there may be an unidentified water leak somewhere in the many kilometres of underground pipe that drain through the City’s storm system and out of the culvert near the Government Road bridge.

The City has storm-water discharge points along the Souris River for when they release water, however, there is a restrictive protocol for when this happens, and the City says no water has been released this winter.

The City does not test for ice thickness, and while a myriad of factors that can alter ice thickness, the City considers all frozen bodies of water within our community to be unsafe and users assume all risk.

Anyone who uses the river needs to consider ice safety and thickness.
