Weyburn's fire chief is warning people to be careful when going onto ice surfaces these days.

"You know, when we have a period of temperatures that they are fluctuating like they are right now, between freezing and thawing, and we even get some rain and we even get some running water like we have in the river, it can erode and destroy the ice." said Chief Simon Almond. " It may re-freeze and look safe, but it's never as safe as it looked originally."

"We have a saying is 'no ice is safe ice'." added Almond. " We very much encourage everybody to stay off the ice. I know that activities dictate that you go on the ice, but we encourage people to be extremely cautious and mindful of ice conditions."

Almond says if you do venture out onto the ice, it's a good idea to be prepared. "By all means, drill the ice. And just be prepared in case you do fall through the ice. Have some things with you, whether it be a long pole, a rope or things like that, so that you can help yourself or someone else can assist you."
