While it happens very rarely in Weyburn, a vehicle owner report to the Weyburn Police Service last week that the gas in their fuel tank had been stolen.

Deputy Police Chief Rod Stafford says it may or may not have been a crime of opportunity.

“My information is there was no damage done like somebody pried it or anything like that, so it could have been just a conventional gas cap that was easily removed or one of these newer vehicles that don't lock, but as soon as you open it you've got immediate access to the filler spout,” he explained.

He said the incident is still under investigation, but it's not something they often hear about in Weyburn.

“We've got no information at all, other than the person had a full tank of fuel and then didn't have a full tank of fuel, I assume that it was siphoned or pumped out,” said Stafford. “It's very uncharacteristic for us, or if it does happen it's not being reported, because this is the first theft of fuel from a parked vehicle that I can recall in Weyburn in a very long time.”

The incident occurred in the parking lot on Ninth Avenue south between February 14th and 16th.

“We are still actively investigating it and very interested in obtaining any information, so, as with any other case, if anybody does have some information or witnessed something that they felt maybe was odd at the time and caused them to do a double-take, we'd appreciate them calling the Weyburn police service.”

He said if the person reporting would prefer to remain anonymous, they can call Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
