The Weyburn Combined Traffic Services Section took to social media over recent days to call out some driving behaviours of motorists in and around Weyburn.

The first was referenced in a tweet on February 15th.

Officers were responding to a priority call, driving east on 1st Avenue. A vehicle failed to pull over to allow the police to pass for three blocks. Once they were past the motorist, at the corner of 1st Avenue and 16th Street another vehicle then made a turn onto 1st Avenue, almost resulting in a collision with the cruiser.

"It is simply ridiculous that in this day and age, with the advancements of emergency lighting and siren technology, that people simply ignore emergency vehicles and fail to drive according to the law,” said Constable Kalin Wiebe about the incident. “They are delaying our ability to respond and potentially save a life."

The Traffic Safety Act states motorists must pull over to the right and stop to allow an emergency vehicle using lights and sirens to pass. Motorists must also not enter an intersection until after the emergency vehicle has passed. Failing to do so can result in a $125 ticket.

Over the weekend, a pair of near misses almost resulting in accidents involving officers from the CTSS.

One of the incidents involved a commercial vehicle transporting dangerous goods. The other came about when a driver pulled out to pass a slower moving vehicle against a solid line, in an intersection.

When passing, the Traffic Safety Act states passes are not to be attempted if the driver doesn’t have a clear view of the highway for 320 meters, in an intersection, when there is a solid centre line, and when a sign prohibits passing.

Fines for an illegal pass can range from $125 to $150.
