The Weyburn Oilwomen's Association's 14th Annual Golf Open will take place this Friday at the Weyburn Golf Club.

Board Chair Jordan Szczecinski said this event, their primary fundraiser sparked their organization into being all those years ago, and, this year, the tickets all sold out within less than five days.

"It's something that's carried us into the growth that we've had over the years, and been the primary source of all of our funds that we have, turned around back into our community through the donations, the volunteering, the sponsorships," she shared.

Interestingly, she noted the changes since last year have helped them innovate and find new ways to help the community.

In fact, the organization was not stopped by the changes that began in 2020, but they did have to pivot how they do things.

"Through COVID, we actually were able to find a little bit of a niche in our community, and that was what brought out our WOW ZOOM events," she said of the educational and networking events.

"We were able to source people who maybe we wouldn't have before, or make our events a little bit more accessible to those that can't always come out to an event," Szczecinski shared. "And that really actually helped our organization. So, while our year looked a lot different, we actually found a lot of really cool things at cool, new and different things that we could start providing for our community."

"So we're excited that people are looking forward to having something to do again this summer," she said of the Golf Open on Friday. "All of our funds go right back into the community of Weyburn, through various initiatives, such as sponsorship donations, our volunteer efforts, and our four scholarships that we help with."

Szczecinski said they will be making a large donation directly from the tournament.

"This year they are going to Envision Counselling and Support, and we're also adding on a donation to Big Brothers and Big Sisters Weyburn this year as well."

As for the fall, she said they have a full year of WOW events scheduled out already.

"So we're looking forward to announcing all of those that are still coming up," she shared. "We previously have done a large event in the fall as another fundraiser, and it sounds like things might be able to come together for us to be able to do that again, and we're still just finding our way through how the world looks right now and where we can still provide a service to our community."

She added this past year has been another great year of growth for their Weyburn-and-area-centred organization.
