It has been nearly four months since the closure of the Weyburn movie theatre and around six weeks since it was announced by Landmark Cinemas, the owner of the theatre, they will not be renovating and reopening the theatre due to the expense it would take to get it operational.

The Heating system failure and roof issues are part of the renovations needed for the building.

Bill Walker, CEO, Landmark Cinemas, in an email to Discover Weyburn has given an update on what they are doing with the theatre.

"The theatre is not officially listed for sale but we are in contact with a local agent. We have received a few direct inquiries with varying degrees of interest and will certainly connect with all those who have inquired once the listing is complete."

The Movie theatre was originally closed in November after the heating system failed. The hope of Weyburn residents was for the movie theatre to be fixed and improved. Earlier in 2017 Landmark Cinemas was purchased by Kinepolis Group, a Belgian company. There were planned investments for new seating in the theatre. When it was discovered how much renovating the theatre would cost, Landmark decided it was not financially viable for them to pay for those renovations and improvements. Weyburn's Soo Theatre was closed permanently in January.

Some Weyburn residents attempted a petition campaign through social media to re-open the theatre but were unable to gain enough traction. It is unknown what change that would have to Landmark Cinemas decision to permanently close the property.

Walker previously said Landmark would help any interested Entrepreneur with what is needed to open a theatre in the city.
