Unpleasant smells from the Weyburn lagoon, south east of the city, have been affecting residents.

"The hot dry weather we've been experiencing this year means we've seen some evaporation and lack of oxygen in the lagoon which can create that odor," says Claude Morin Superintendent of Public Works and Parks. "It's usually very short term and very intermittent."

The City of Weyburn is aware of the issue and are working on some solutions.

"We've been pumping into that lagoon, which we don't normally do as it's the diversionary lagoon, so we've been pumping water or sewage into it to aerate it," says Morin. "Once the oxygen gets in the water typically the smells will go away."

Morin adds that rain and the wind can help add oxygen as well.

The city is also looking into adding some long term solutions such as adding some permanent aerators, however, that would be next years project.
