With wind gusts upwards of 90 kilometers an hour and sustained winds up around 60 kilometers an hour, Weyburn is cleaning up this morning.

The winds are responsible for toppling a traffic light standard at the intersection of Government Road and Souris Avenue. It came down just before midnight. Around the same time, the Weyburn Police Service issued an advisory, cautioning Weyburn residents to remain indoors for safety.

The intersection is currently being treated as a four-way stop, although it should be back to normal in the morning.

Claude Morin, the superintendent of public works and parks with the City of Weyburn, said once the winds die down, crews will begin work to get the light standard back up and running. The expected timeline is for the work to be done Thursday.

The winds are also being blamed on a number of small fires around the community.

A tree fell into a power line in the southwest part of the city, resulting in a fire and power outage for many in the area. Another fire was reported along Ash Drive in the city’s northwest. A third fire is reported to have happened along Highway 13, outside of the city limits.

The city is also reporting a tree along Assiniboia Street was uprooted by the winds. It has since been cleaned up by city crews, allowing traffic to pass. As well, there is damage along the boardwalk. The poles holding the Boardwalk Banner Project were bent by the winds. They will be repaired in the coming days.

It is expected more damage will be reported to the city during the day, and crews will be out cleaning up as needed.
