The Rural Municipality of Weyburn is still negotiating with the city for access to sewage treatment for its proposed septic receiving station.

"Right now the septic receiving station has been approved by the city engineering department as well as the Water Security Agency, and we are working with the City of Weyburn on developing the agreement for us to access their system." said the Reeve of the Rural Municipality, Carmen Sterling.

Sterling says they hope to negotiate either a reduced rate for sewage treatment, or have a system where there would not be a fee until some point down the road. "I think it was a couple of weeks ago now, maybe even a month ago, asking them to review their septage bylaw, or to exempt the RM from the bylaw so we can come up to an agreement as to what the fees and charges may be for the RM to hook up to the system." she told Discover Weyburn.

Last week, Weyburn's head of engineering told City Council a rate of $9.58 per cubic metre would be in line with charges levied by half a dozen communities in Saskatchewan. Sterling feels that's a bit high, "We're hoping that we can negotiate either a reduced rate or a different sort of a rate mechanism where we maybe don't have a fee in place until some point down the road."

The septic receiving station project is expected to cost between $700,000 and $750,000.

It would build a facility which could receive sewage from around the rural area, which would then be processed in the city's system.
