It seems like spring has come early to Weyburn. Daytime highs in the past few days have been well above normal. The overnight low Thursday was 6°, 11 degrees warmer than the average daytime high for this time of year. Many feel, at this rate, and traces of winter could be long gone soon.

John Paul Cragg, regional meteorologist with Environment Canada, cautions that may not be the case. While the weather has been very warm as of late, it won’t last forever.

“We’re in spring right now,” Cragg said, but he had some bad news as well. “At the end of February, it looks like we’ll be falling back into another winter, before potentially warming up again in March.”

The warm temperatures are expected to stick around into next week, though. The weekend could see the majority of the snow in the city melt away ,with highs of 6° or more. Tuesday could set some records as well, with a daytime high of 10° in the forecast.

With Winterfest scheduled for Monday, many are paying attention to what the weather will hold for the annual celebration of winter. The city is planning for the indoor activities to go as scheduled, but there could be changes to the outdoor activities. Three years ago, the first Winterfest was cancelled due to extreme cold, while last year's celebration had man y of the outdoor events cancelled due to the lack of snow.
