It's a chance for Weyburn artists to show the community what they've been working on, as well as a chance for community members to vote on their favourite works of local art.

The Weyburn Arts Council will host an artists' reception for the 35th annual James Weir People’s Choice winners announcement and award presentation tonight.

The James Weir award has, in fact, been around longer than some of the artists have been alive.

“We're in our 35th year of the show, marking it as the longest running people's choice awards in western Canada,” said City Curator Regan Lanning.

The event is open to the public and starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Allie Griffin Art Gallery, located on the lower level of the Weyburn Public Library.

“I will make a short speech and then we will get to the celebrations of our winners,” said Lanning.

She added the first place winner has their name engraved on the original James Weir award, but three trophies will go to the artists whose works received the most votes.

“For a number of years, Speedy Glass has been making trophies for first, second and third-place winners,” she said. “They are gorgeous this year.”

There were 34 entries this year. Voting was held from January 8th to February 15th.
