While winter doesn't officially begin until next week, with temperatures being well below seasonal averages lately, it's certainly in full effect nonetheless.

Pam Arndt-Schick with the Weyburn Humane Society says this is the time of year we need to remember to think about the pets.

"When you get up in the morning, before you start your vehicle, tap on the hood, because a lot of times, cats like to find a nice warm place," she shared. "Also do a walkaround around your vehicle and check out the wheel well, because sometimes cats will crawl in there as well, so that's always a good thing to remember before you start your vehicle."

Most humans and pets just want to get back inside, but some dog breeds prefer being outside longer than their owners. Even with the cold weather, certain dog breeds just love to be allowed to spend some time outside.

"Make sure they have some type of a shelter, whether it's a dog house or some type of car port, and some straw or a couple of blankets, something to lay on that could provide a little warmth, and definitely make sure they have fresh water, and a toy, a couple of toys."

She adds some dogs love playing with a ball, even if by themselves.
