SaskTel and Southeast College are teaming up again to provide training in the telecommunications field.

The Manager of Marketing and Communications for Southeast College says the course will focus on the wiring of telephone and data networks in homes and businesses.

Sheena Onrait says the course was first offered on a trial basis at the Estevan campus. "We were lucky enough to have some of our electrician students offer to be in our first course for us, and our feedback was absolutely fantastic. In fact I do believe at least one of our students was able to secure a position after the course." Onrait told Discover Weyburn.

She says the course will provide hands-on training with equipment typically used in the industry. "It's putting the systems into the homes, and what happens in that process, and how they go about doing that. They also touched on some fibre optics and some fibre optic splicing as well, which was incredibly interesting."

Onrait added that skills taught in the course are in good demand. "It sounds as though the trade skills in the area of telecommunications are in demand, and that's kind of why SaskTel came to us and said hey, you know, we need something to be able to provide skilled labourers and so we recognized the opportunity to be able to partner with them and develop this training that would help meet labour market demand here in Southeast Saskatchewan.

The 64 hour course will be available at the Estevan campus of Southeast College.
