It will be the second meeting of the month for Weyburn City Council when they get together at City Hall this evening. The meeting is expected to have a packed agenda.

One of the most talked about items on the agenda is proposed changes to the city’s traffic bylaw.

At the last meeting two weeks ago, the discussions revolved around changes to the speed limits in the city. While an online poll earlier this year indicated a majority of respondents wanted to see the speed limit increased from 40 km/h to 50 km/h, the council was hesitant to make the change. In a report prepared for the council by the engineering department, the changes will not include an increase.

What the recommendations do include is to put a time limit on the hours the speed limits in school zones are enforced. The proposed changes to the traffic bylaw will see the speed limit be 30 km/h in school zones from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The report on the traffic bylaw also includes proposed changes to snow routes in the city, as well as some language reinforcing the bylaw's language which considers Segways, wheelchairs and medi-scooters as pedestrians and are to use sidewalks, unless there is no sidewalk available.

The councillors will receive a presentation about the planned recreational and cultural centre for Weyburn. Not much has been released about the project yet, but it is known it will be joined to the new elementary school planned for Weyburn.

The mill rates for the city will also be formally established in a bylaw. The mill rates were determined with the budget passed earlier this year. Some aspects of the mill rates, such as those governing educational taxes, were set by the provincial government in their budget earlier this month, and those changes will also be added into the city’s bylaw.

The meeting begins at 5:00 p.m. in chambers at City Hall. We will have full coverage of the meeting on-air and online tomorrow morning.
