Monthly safety focuses are replacing SGI's two day traffic safety blitz's of 2013 and January's focus is on intersection safety.

Manager of media relations for SGI Kelley Brinkworth tells us why it's important saying "40 per cent of all car accidents in our province occur in intersections, in 2012 there were close to 12,000 collisions at intersections across the province resulting in 33 deaths and more than 4,000 injuries."

Throughout the month police will be paying extra attention to traffic violations occurring at intersections like running red lights, not stopping at stop signs, failing to yield for oncoming traffic and pedestrians and even pedestrian jaywalking.

SGI wants to remind us that during the winter months, remember to slow down as you approach an intersection, even if you have the right of way, in case other vehicles aren't able to stop. Don't follow too closely and give yourself extra time to stop so you have some room when driving conditions are slippery.

These safety focuses will be different every month and is replacing SGI's two day traffic safety blitz's.
