Aiming to provide maternal and pediatric care in the province, the Jim Pattison Children's Hospital held its grand opening on Thursday in Saskatoon.

The $286-million dollar facility features private rooms, kid-friendly decor, and state-of-the-art equipment. The province provided about $257 million in capital costs, while the JPCH Foundation and donor contributions totalled about $75 million.

Three million donor dollars came from three families here in the southeast. The families of Ron and Shirley Carson, Ken and Jo Ann Cugnet, and Jerry and Orlanda Mainil each contributing one million dollars towards the project.

Premier Scott Moe was joined by lead donor Jim Pattison, representatives from the Government of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation, donors and community members to celebrate the official grand opening of the hospital. Jo Ann Cugnet was joined by her four sons and their families at the grand opening as well, where they had the opportunity to tour the operating theatre their donation helped build.

Dan Cugnet, who is the eldest son of Ken and Jo, said the new hospital is wonderful and will be an asset in the province for generations to come.

"The design is cutting edge for modern health delivery, visually it’s appealing and there are so many functional things that streamline and make the job easier for medical staff and less intrusive for patients, specifically mom and baby. I think everyone who had the opportunity to go through it can safely say it was well worth the wait," shared Cugnet.

The final touches are being put on the 176-bed building, and the first patients should be admitted by September 29th.
