If fraudsters ever decided to apply their seemingly endless creativity to something other than swindling people, they might actually manage to make the world a better place. As it is, they've applied that creativity to another form of scam.

SaskPower is warning customers of a new kind of fraud they've seen making the rounds. The fraudster sends an email or text claiming the recipient has been overbilled, then directs them to a website that may request personal or financial information.

"SaskPower takes the confidentiality of personal customer information very seriously," they said in the release. "While SaskPower does send monthly bill reminders to customers via email, we NEVER conduct financial transactions through text messages, email, or social media."

If you're unsure about communication you get from SaskPower, they ask you to contact their customer service at 1-888-757-6937. They also said if you become a victim of fraud you should contact your bank and your local police department immediately.

Scam attempts are on the rise in the time of COVID-19, and this is the second scam involving SaskPower the crown corporation has had to issue a response to in the past thirty days. The last scam attempt involved people going door-to-door to try and convince people to sign up for the power bill rebate from the provincial government.

The Estevan Police Service dealt with a call of fraud earlier this week and are still investigating the complaint of fraud under $5000. They reminded the public not to give out any personal or financial information to anyone they don't know and be aware of fraudulent websites.
