Last Friday, the Weyburn Police Service responded to a complaint at an establishment in the city. As a result, there were two separate vehicle stops, with both of the drivers found to be impaired. They were both charged for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

The calls came in through the Report Impaired Drivers program. The program allows the public to be the eyes of law enforcement in terms of reporting those who may be impaired while behind the wheel.

Constable Kalin Wiebe is with the Weyburn Police Service. He explained people call in when they suspect an impaired driver, and the police head out to investigate.

“It ultimately could be nothing,” Cst. Wiebe said. It could be someone who simply was turning the radio station up, and was distracted for that one second, or it could be someone who is on their cell phone, but it could be someone who is ultimately impaired, and putting other people at risk on the road.”

The Weyburn Police Service receives a varying number of calls reporting impaired drivers every week. While not every reported driver is impaired, the driver may still receive a warning, depending on their driving.

When making reports, Wiebe said the more information provided helps. This includes the make and model of the vehicle, the license plate, the direction the vehicle is travelling and how many people are in the vehicle. When making the report, if you are in a vehicle and are able to call using Bluetooth, then go ahead. Otherwise, pull over to the side of the road to make the call.
