The work on the next phase of Weyburn’s new water reservoir project, the reservoir itself, should be starting in the next few weeks.

The tenders for Contract 2 of the project, the holding tanks themselves, as well as an expansion of the water treatment plant, were voted on by City Council Monday night. Based on a recommendation from the administration, the council selected Westridge Construction Ltd., whose bid came in at just under $10.8 million.

With an overall budget of just over $15 million for the construction, the bid leaves some wiggle room, which was good news for Weyburn Mayor Marcel Roy.

“There’s always unexpected expenses coming out, such as our PST that we have to add to this, and the GST, plus electrical, and other things,” Roy said after the meeting.

Once the construction begins, it is expected the work will take roughly a year to finish. The build will see the construction of two 5.7 million liter treated water tanks, plus the treatment plant expansion.

The contract does not include the electrical work or instrumentation, which will go out in a separate tender in the coming months.

Council was told there shouldn’t be any issues in terms of water service in the city during the construction, and traffic delays are expected to be minimal along 16th Street.
