When a driver needs to turn around, what are the rules for a u-turn? It is a question one Weyburn driver had answered this past week, after becoming involved in a collision after an illegal U-turn.

Weyburn Police Service Deputy Chief Rod Stafford explained here in Saskatchewan, the rules are pretty clear-cut about when and where you can make a U-turn.

“They can’t be made at any intersection that’s controlled by a traffic light unless there is a sign that specifically says that you can, which rarely happens,” Stafford explained. He added they can only be made at an intersection without a traffic light, as long as it is safe to do so. Mid-block U-turns are also prohibited under Weyburn’s traffic bylaw.

For those who need to turn around, Stafford has this piece of advice.

“Just go to the intersection, make sure its safe, and do a U-turn, or go around the block,” he said. “It takes literally one minute more if you need to change the direction you are going.”
