With Remembrance day tomorrow and the students of Weyburns schools having today off school, Remembrance day has been honoured in Weyburn schools earlier in the week.

Weyburn Comprehensive School had a special assembly on Tuesday.

Yesterday, St. Michaels School had a Remembrance Day Mass. Students, teachers and other school staff, as well as parents, grandparents, other family members and members of the community took part in remembering the sacrifices made by Soldiers in conflicts from the first world war to conflicts happening around the world in the present.

Dean Loberg, Principal, St. Michaels School talked about why it is important for students to remember and honour fallen soldiers and veterans, living and deceased.

"On a personal level many of our students will have parents, or grand parents or great grandparents even who have served in the military or forces such as the RCMP, city police and fire fighters. So on a personal level many of them can see remembrance day as a family tradition, where they remember fallen or service members in their family," said Loberg.

"We want our students to recognise those who have fought and served for their freedoms, to have a catholic school, a separate school system, as well as public school systems and that was fought for by our military and in my case, my grandfather and my great grandfather both served."

Loberg said that those are the memories that they want to instill in their students.

"We also in todays world need to keep in mind that there are also lots of things going out there. Our military is still serving, they are still protecting us from different types of violence maybe, and the rest of the world and protecting other people in the rest of the world and their freedoms so we want to instill that historical memory but also an awareness of whats going on currently."

Loberg mentioned that even though veterans are becoming fewer and fewer from world wars of the 20th century, there are still stories available through technology and books which have been made available and it makes it even more important to make the connection to the modern conflicts and service members of today.
