Former Member of Parliament for Souris-Moose Mountain Roy Bailey passed away last Thursday in Bengough. He was 89 years old.

Bailey served as an MLA, an MP and a school board trustee over his time in politics. He also worked as an education administrator, teacher and farmer in addition to being a politician.

He started as a member of the Social Credit Party, and then joined the Progressive Conservative Party when the two merged in 1971. He ran for the leadership of the party in 1973 and came in second.

In 1975, he was elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in the riding of Rosetown-Elrose, where he served until 1978.

After his time in the legislature, he then served as a school board trustee in the Borderland School Division, which encompassed Bengough, from 1984 to 1993.

In 1997 he was elected to Parliament as a member of the Reform Party in the riding of Souris-Moose Mountain. He would serve in the position until 2004 when he chose to not seek re-election.

Bailey is survived by his daughters Susan and Janet. His funeral service is scheduled to be held Wednesday at the Bengough Community Centre.
