The reaction is beginning to come in about the news the Weyburn and District United Way will be looking at dissolving when they meet next Wednesday. President of the United Way, Sabrina Kraft, confirmed the news with Discover Weyburn yesterday.

Weyburn Mayor Marcel Roy provided his personal thoughts on the possibility of the United Way in the community dissolving.

“I think that it’s very unfortunate that such a thing would be happening, especially with the United Way being such a mainstay in Weyburn,” Roy told Discover Weyburn. “I think before they talk about dissolving the whole United Way they should look at maybe a different shift in direction.”

For Jeff Richards, his thoughts were the opposite of Roys. Richards is a former president of the United Way in Weyburn and knows first hand the challenges the board would face on a regular basis.

“I appreciate their hard work, and I’m certain they have got some cool plans going forward, so although it’s never easy to make a decision like this I think at the end of the day we’ll come to find this was the right decision,” Richards explained.

Kraft explained the reason behind the motion to Discover Weyburn Thursday.

“In today’s environment, it has become increasingly difficult for organizations to support the communities they serve adequately, with limited or no staff resources,” Kraft said. “Given the size and capacity of our organization, the board has determined that United Way Weyburn can no longer be effective in our community as currently structured.”

The United Way will be holding their meeting Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Vimy Room at the Royal Canadian Legion in Weyburn.
