The building is in need of repair. The heating and cooling system is broken and the roof also needs to be worked on. These issues, including the presence of asbestos, were enough to lead Landmark Cinemas decision to permanently close the Weyburn Movie theatre without a plan to build a new theatre in the city except for an eight-screen theatre in Regina.

Weyburn residents took to social media and the topic has been the talk of the town.

Colin Jones and his wife, Yvonne, made Weyburn their home a number of years ago for the family and are invested in the community.

"It's a shame really because I think the movie theatre is central to family entertainment in Weyburn. I think it's had a good reputation in the past. I can understand from Landmark Cinemas point of view how they feel about it from a business perspective and how the local people feel from a family perspective, another avenue has been cut off and they are not able to go out and enjoy themselves," said Colin who says there needs to be more family orientated things to do.

"People can go to Regina if they have to."

Yvonne said that she used to go to the movie theatre as kids every Saturday morning.

"You cant do anything in this town on a Saturday morning in the winter if your 10, 11, 12 unless you just want to go swimming." She suggests a movie theatre could show cheap cartoons on Saturday mornings and still have blockbusters in the evenings.

Tanner Jensen another Weyburn resident and Movie-goer, is not happy with the closure.

"It kind of upset me, there was a lot of people who would go to the theatre that now can't make the trip to Regina or Estevan to watch a movie. Some people would go every week when a new movie came out. That was family time."

Jensen hopes the theatre is fixed up and reopened or a new theatre built with at least two screens to give movie options. He has fond memories of the movie theatre.

"My friend's grandpa used to take him every Tuesday to see the new movie that was in town and I tagged along a couple of times. That was a really good memory, he was a great guy. Unfortunately, he passed away."

"I think there were a lot of memories that are tied to the movie theatre that should not go away."

Allysha Croissant started an online petition to save the theatre but has stopped because people weren't supportive of it. She was also unsure of where to send the online petition to.

"I wish I had the money to start one because I think it's needed and I'm not alone. I miss it very much. If you don't like sports in this town you are left with nothing to do."
