Earlier this week, the Prairie Sky Co-op made some generous donations to various causes in and around Weyburn. As a result of their second annual "Fuel Good Day," Prairie Sky was able to help five different local charitable causes.

Jerry Ponto is the Member Relations Manager for Prairie Sky Co-op and is proud of the support their event has received.

"Our Fuel Good Days took place on September 18. Across Prairie Sky Co-op's service area — Beaubier, Weyburn, Land and Milestone — we donated to a number of different charities," Ponto said enthusiastically. "In Beaubier it went to the Lake Alma Rec board. In Weyburn, it went to the Humane Society and the Weyburn and District United Way. In Lang, we donated to the Volunteer Fire Brigade and in Milestone, we donated to the Milestone Community Pool."

For every litre of gas sold back on September 18, five cents was donated from Federated Coop and five cents per litre from Prairie Sky Co-op. Through this initiative alone, the Co-op was able to raise a sizable amount of money.

"We're very pleased to say that we were able to donate $5,600 dollars through those efforts and put that into the hands of the charities, which we know always put it to good use," Ponto said. "We certainly look forward to doing it again in 2019."

Of all the money raised, all five charities split the total evenly. Each received a cheque of $1,350 dollars.

This project isn't just local. It takes place in every Western Canadian Co-op location, but each store gets to decide which local cause they want to support. It's a tough choice picking just a few causes every year, but Ponto believes others will get their turn in the coming years as the Fuel Good Days promotion is "building momentum".

"Each year we do pick and select different charities. We'll do that process throughout the spring of next year," he explained. "We certainly always look throughout the community and decide which charities are in need and try to support them. We try to touch all aspects of the community."
