The Weyburn Police Service says they receive reports every week of people getting phone call scams. A lot of the scams are repetitive, but some are new.

Two scams that were reported this week involved the CRA and STARS Lottery.

"What we're seeing right now is a CRA Scam. It's where they tell whoever answers the phone, they have an outstanding tax bill and if they don't pay it right away they will be sending people to arrest them. Often they'll ask for payment in iTunes cards, or whatever," Police Chief Marlo Pritchard said. "The CRA doesn't do that and the CRA doesn't contact people nor do they arrest. We just advise people do not give any personal information out and don't fall for that old scam."

"The STARS scam is, typically what they're saying is, that you've won a prize. You've won a new vehicle and you have to make a payment before you take possession of it," Pritchard explained. "Again, don't fall for that, don't give out personal information and definitely don't send out any money."

Pritchard has connections with a cyber crime unit and said they're targetting the scammers on a national level.

"They're often calling from overseas, or they use a number of different numbers, so they're very difficult to track," the Police Chief said. "We do work from a national perspective with the Cyber Crime Central feeding house, and we track that and there is work being down to try and shut them down at a national level. But, they are very, very difficult – the biggest thing is prevention. It's a crime that is preventable, just hang up."

The Weyburn Police are asking people to call and let them know if they receive a fraudulent phone call.
