The community got a chance to enjoy a festive fundraiser this weekend, put on by the Weyburn Riding and Driving Club at the old City barns, featuring horse-drawn sleigh rides in the snow, Santa Claus and more.

Club President Mason Richaud said they raised $1,200 for a few projects, including tinning the barn roofs, electrical work and replacing an old tractor.

"There's some pretty big items that we need to get so we need the community's help in funding that," explained Richaud.

He said membership fees only cover regular maintenance costs so they appreciate the community's support. There's not only maintenance but fees associated with leasing the property from the City as well.

"When it comes to doing the added stuff that we want to, we need to fundraise for that and we do that because then it keeps the cost at a minimal for people who have their horse out here."

Anyone with a horse and living within nine kilometers of Weyburn can be a member, however, Mason said the club is working on a way to allow someone without a horse to become a member. He said everyone using the barns right now live in the city.

"This is an opportunity that if you live in town and not have your facilities here is a chance to get in and to have that opportunity and here it's fully equipped there's inside barns, there's pens outside, as well as an outdoor riding arena," said Richaud. "So, it's a one-stop shop. Everything is here for them and it's to provide a luxury that not everyone gets an opportunity to do."

The sleigh rides were given upon donation to the club. There was also hot cocoa served and photos with Santa available to those attending. The club also collected non-perishable food items for the Weyburn Salvation Army Food Bank.
