Over the course of the summer, we told you the story of Jonathan Miller.

He was originally born in Weyburn back in 1951 but moved with his family back to the United Kingdom while still an infant. Since then, he has lived in the UK and moved to France with his wife in recent years, where he lives along the Mediterranean coast.

While he had returned to Canada a few times over the course of the years, he had never taken the chance to visit his hometown. That is, until recently.

Sparked by a pair of chance conversations over the years, Miller booked a vacation to visit Canada, including a trip to his hometown, which he had never seen through the lens of an adult, let alone a child.

The first chance encounter was when he bumped into the only other person he had ever met from Weyburn while vacationing in Australia a few years ago. The two chatted about their shared home town, and took a photo together, but never exchanged any contact information, leaving it as just a random, chance encounter.

The second chance conversation happened during the Invictus Games in Toronto in 2017. He spoke with the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Lois Mitchell. She invited Miller and his wife to join her for dinner if they were ever in Alberta.

The vacation was planned, and they came over to Canada from France with the goal of meeting the mystery woman from Australia, if she could be identified, as well as dinner with Alberta’s Lieutenant Governor.

Miller, his wife, and their travelling companions were in Weyburn for 24 hours, starting on September 1st. Over the course of their time in the Opportunity City, they took in a number of sites including Heritage Village, the Signal Hill Arts Centre, and City Hall. They met with a number of people in the community who knew who he was thanks to the quest to identify the woman he took a picture with in Australia a few years ago. Sadly, the two never caught up with each other here in Weyburn over the weekend, but it didn’t stop Miller from forming a number of memories of his hometown.

Miller is back in France now and took the chance to catch up with Discover Weyburn’s Steven Wilson by phone. You can listen to their complete conversation, about Weyburn, it’s history, a unique take on the old Saskatchewan Hospital and more, below.
