Discover Weyburn News received an open letter of thanks dated October 26 from the parents of the girl that was reported missing on Saturday. The girl was found safe and sound later that evening. The letter follows:

To: The City of Weyburn

Saturday Oct. 24 I called to report that my wife and I could not find our 12 year old daughter and had no idea where she could be or would have gone. Approximately 6.5 hours later, around 10pm, she called from a farm house east of Weyburn where she had walked/wandered into. She is safe and at home…the best possible outcome to the story. She had decided she needed to go for a walk, alone, to collect her thoughts and clear her head, got twisted around/lost in the darkness and found a farmyard/house where she was invited in to call home so we could pick her up. (I should add here that I don’t know if nicer people could have ended up finding her.)

There are several important events from that night I wish to address in this letter:

The Weyburn City Police acted with as much professionalism, speed, efficiency, and courtesy as anyone could possibly imagine. They communicated their plans extremely well. They brought in a search and rescue dog. There was a drone and operator coming in from Estevan. They coordinated with the Weyburn Fire Department to help with the search. I was given periodic updates (good, bad, or indifferent). The officers interviewed me and my wife and part of their due diligence is asking difficult and invasive questions. Even through that process I would commend them for their professionalism and “matter of fact, this is an important part of the process attitude). I cannot put in words the respect I have for anyone and everyone I dealt with in person and on the phone from their Police Department that day.

Obviously we would also like to thank the Weyburn Fire Department, RCMP, Family, Friends, her Principal and Teachers, and to our astonishment tens if not hundreds of “concerned members of the community” that without hesitation began looking/helping in the process. The way people in the community rallied to help us was nothing short of remarkable. It is hard to put into words how helpless you feel when you cannot find your child, and at the same time how confident and hopeful it is when you see all the help that “just appears from within the community”. THANK YOU!

Too many people take for granted the difficult job police and firefighters have. Too many times the bad story or complaint is heard through the news. I want to share this story so that people remember and take pride in the GREAT job that the Police and Firefighters in Weyburn did for us.

From the Family
