It wasn't a typical Tuesday for Weyburn police last week. They came across three separate cases of public intoxication - all before 10:30 p.m.

Police were called to a downtown business at 7 p.m. for one man, described as severely intoxicated, and came across another intoxicated man at 9:45 p.m. Both were lodged in cells until sober.

Police received another call to a downtown business at 10:30 p.m. for an intoxicated woman. She was released into the custody of her sober friend.

"It's a bit of an anomaly," shared Deputy Chief Rod Stafford. "We occasionally deal with one, perhaps, on a weekend in the wee hours of the morning when somebody's trying to make it home from an establishment or a party."

Stafford said lodging a person in cells for their own safety or putting them into the custody of a sober family member or friend are two options for officers dealing with an overly intoxicated individual. He said people are fined if it occurs three or more times a year.
