Farming 8500 acres north of Weyburn, by Cedoux, the Nikolejsins have had their farm in their family for 100 years. Their hard work, and commitment to the community, was key in the reasons why they received the Golden Sheaf Award Tuesday night at McKenna Hall. The award was presented by the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce as part of Farmer Appreciation Night.

“I think the first thing was probably, why us?”, Dean Nikolejsin said when asked to describe his thoughts when he found out they would be receiving the award. “We don’t feel like we do anything special so, it was probably more shock and surprise.”

“Having a couple of pieces of land now that are century family farm pieces of land just solidifies that what we’re doing is what we love to do, and what we want to do,” said Kari Nikolejsin, Dean’s wife.

The Nikolejsins’ are the second generation of the family to receive the award. Dean’s father John received the Golden Sheaf 22 years ago. Now, the family looks ahead at the future, as their sons Ty and Rhett begin getting involved in the farm.

“It makes a very difficult day a good day when you can see that they’re out there helping, and they’re actually enjoying what they’re doing. They’re not just out there because they have to be,” added Dean.
