Last night the City of Weyburn and the Weyburn Credit Union announced a deal made between the two to rename the Recreation and Culture Centre that is currently being constructed.

Over the next 20 years, the Weyburn Credit Union will donate $50,000 a year for a grand total of $1 million. In exchange, the Recreation and Culture Centre will be named the Weyburn Credit Union Spark Centre.

"It's not the first opportunity the Weyburn Credit Union has had of this kind," explained Lynn Colquhoun, Board Chair with the Weyburn Credit Union.  "These opportunities present themselves and the Weyburn Credit Union determines whether its a good investment of our member's assets and how it brings value to our community."

After the opportunity was presented, the Board of Directors for the Weyburn Credit Union discussed the opportunity for several months, determining if it was something they would feel comfortable investing in. Colquhoun says they looked at how it would affect their member's lifestyle in the city. After much contemplation, the Weyburn Credit Union decided it would be a good investment.

Colquhoun explained that despite it being a $1 million investment, it does not affect member rewards at all.

"With the opportunity to have your name on full display on the building, there is a cost," Colquhoun added. "Not only is our name on the building and people are recognizing who we are and how we add value, but the City will have that money to continue to enhance that facility and create opportunities."

The money itself has no restrictions for it's uses with the City, however, the Weyburn Credit Union says they are hoping the City will re-invest that money back into the facility in order to help create new opportunities.

“The City of Weyburn is extremely excited for the upcoming opening of the Credit Union Spark Centre in 2021,” said Andrew Crowe, Director of Leisure Services for the City of Weyburn in the press release that was released on Saturday. “The new leisure and arts facility is a major attraction in our community which will provide safe and healthy inclusive opportunities for years to come. We value the strong partnership with the Weyburn Credit Union and are thankful for their decision to invest back into our incredible city.”
