A new outdoor rink to be constructed in Weyburn. The City Leisure Service Department announced it during last night's council meeting as part of an effort to help promote healthy lifestyles in the community. The rink will be located at the corner of 2nd Street and Souris Avenue.

The skating rink will be installed and maintained by the Leisure Services department with help from the Public Works department and will be constructed in a manner to promote inclusive and accessible skating opportunities for all people in the community.

While it is a rink, it is meant for leisure and will have no hockey nets or lines set up, however, use of the rink will be free to the community.

Construction for the rink is expected to begin on Tuesday. To help facilitate the construction, Souris Avenue will be closed adjacent to the lot between 8:00 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. over the next two days.

In other rink-related news, the council approved of the construction of another outdoor rink in Gordon Miles Park, one that has been built and maintained by Ryan Birnie since 2016. This year Birnie requested to build a 'warm-up shack' as he used to offer his garage, but due to lack of space that is no longer an option. While some concerns were raised about fire safety, the council agreed to allow the construction of the rink again for the 2019-2020 winter season.
