A new contract between the City of Weyburn and Weyburn Regional Economic Development. The three year deal was agreed upon by Weyburn City Council at the most recent public meeting.

WRED works with the City of Weyburn, and the Rural Municipality of Weyburn, to promote and develop local business and tourism. This includes everything from enhancing the capacity of the region to attract new residents, to developing a competitive business climate, and supporting established business sectors. To help accomplish these goals, WRED looks at a number of projects throughout the year.

Twila Walkeden is the general manager of WRED. She explained data from a number of sources is used to help make their case, and the 2016 Census will be one of those sources.

“It’s going to allow us to attract investors by using credible data,” she explained .This includes looking at what the region could be lacking in terms of retail, what sectors are the key drivers of the economy in the region, and more. It could also show if Weyburn is losing business to places like Regina, Estevan or even the United States.

The R.M. of Weyburn will be voting on the new contract at an upcoming council meeting.
