WPS has recently released a clarification about the use of motorized scooters.  Click here for the full story.

Weyburn Police Service would like to remind the drivers of motorized scooters that the traffic bylaw also applies to them.

"If they're motorized scooters that are operating on the roadway, they must follow the rules of the road," said Chief Marlow Pritchard. "Historically, we have charged people for impaired driving on a scooter. So, all of the other rules would apply."

Distracted driving tickets can be issued for using a cell phone while driving a scooter.

He adds that scooters should not be driven on sidewalks.

They are also not designed for passengers. Therefore, children who cannot be buckled into a safety seat must not ride on scooters.

"They should be restrained in some fashion. Those scooters are not designed for passengers," he added. "It's all about the safety of the children, first and foremost."

Pritchard noted that the best way to deal with someone not following the rules set out in the traffic bylaws is to contact the WPS.

"If people are seeing this, give us a call and we'll definitely come out and take a look at it."
