In the midst of a severe thunderstorm and a tornado watch, the Weyburn Fire Department responded to a call of a house fire on 11th Street on the night of Sunday, July 7.

In the driving rains, fire crews battled a small blaze on a single-occupant home. The resident was able to escape safely with their pets.

"We were called at approximately 1:00 a.m. for a reported fire and we showed up to discover a fire running up the side of a house. Our primary concern was to make sure that everybody was safe and out of the home," Deputy Fire Chief Denis Poulin explained.

The blaze was quickly extinguished by the WFD with the help of the rainfall. While Mother Nature did assist in putting out the fire, she may have actually been the one to help start it.

"We have a high suspicion of it being electrical in nature. It appears there were some electrical devices on the outside of the house in that area, which may have not been fully weather-proofed and contributed to the start of the fire," Poulin noted.

Upon arrival, crews quickly went to work on fighting the fire before it was able to spread to other homes in the area. Poulin said that fires on the side of homes have the potential to get into the eavestroughs and into the attic. They checked for that and discovered a small fire in the attic, which they took care of.

"There is a fair bit of damage to the home but at least the individual will be able to save a lot of their belongings," the Deputy Fire Chief said.

He added a reminder for people to make sure things aren't plugged in outside that can start fires during storms.
