UPDATE: Environment Canada extended the snowfall warning, which was previously for regions west of Highway 6, to now include Weyburn, Estevan, Radville, Milestone, and other communities in the region.

Parts of Saskatchewan could see significant snowfall over the next 24 hours, as a system moves up into the region from the United States.

With upwards of 15 centimetres expected in some regions, the system has prompted Environment Canada to issue snowfall warnings for many areas, including Weyburn, Estevan, Radville, Milestone, Bengough, Avonlea, Minton, Regway, Ogema. The warnings extend across much of southern Saskatchewan.

“We’re looking for snow to move into southwestern Saskatchewan, over in the Cypress Hills, probably around lunchtime or shortly after, then making it into the Assiniboia area late in the afternoon then into Weyburn and Estevan sometime in the evening hours,” explained Mark Melsness, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Temperatures are expected to hover around the freezing mark for much of the day, and into the evening, which could lead to some less than ideal driving conditions. Melsness advises drivers to exercise caution on the highways once the precipitation starts.
