There are a lot of good reasons to find a way to get active, but not many incentives are more powerful than the one provided by the Blue Cross Go Out And Play Challenge. One community is going to take home $10,000 for a local project.

Under the rules of the challenge, the project must be directly related to getting out to play, in other words, something that helps people get active outdoors. In the town of Midale's case, that project will be a revitalization of the local basketball court.

"We are hoping to win $10,000 to revitalize our basketball court that is attached to our school," said town administrative assistant Vanessa Lund. "It's in pretty bad disrepair, and we're really hoping that by getting people to go out and play, we can raise money to fix it."

Community members need to sign up online and log their hours of physical activity to help push Midale ahead of other communities vying for the $10,000 prize. Fortunately, the definition of physical activity is quite accommodating.

"Everything that you do in your daily life," Lund said. "Go for a walk, walk the dog, go tobogganing, I think even things like vacuuming your house count. All you have to do is be active, go out and play. They want us to have fun with it."

According to Lund, participants have to log their minutes on a daily basis and can't go back and log on for previous days. The extra effort would be well worth it for the prize at the finish line, however, and it's not just residents of Midale who can support the town in this

"Anybody can do it, which is good," Lund said. "Really, how would a town the size of Midale be able to compete against, say, Weyburn, because we're so much smaller? As long as you get the word out there, and everybody in town shares it with their friends and family wherever they are, we can do it."

Several other communities around the southeast are also going to participate in the Go Out And Play Challenge, including Carlyle and Lampman.  The minutes of physical activity has to be logged from today, through to March 10th.
