Weyburn hosted the last on-the-road Leadership debate for the Saskatchewan Party before the final one takes place this week on Thursday in Regina.

Weyburn's Mayor Marcel Roy has given his reaction to the event which saw a lot of Weyburn and Area residents show up to hear what the candidates had to say.

"It was all very interesting to see what the candidates were talking about, all the way through talking about renegotiating transfer payments which was a very interesting point which is going to be done in 2019 and how some of the candidates viewed that, all the way through to how they were not really committed to Weyburn's hospital situation down here," said Mayor Roy.

Mayor Roy reflected on how it can be easy to forget that the North have issues that we don't have. Some of the candidates mentioned the need to provide hospitals up north but also the need to balance the budget before any new hospitals are built including Weyburn.

Mayor Roy said that as the revenues come in based on a better price of barrels for oil closer to $60 or $70, the quicker the budget may be balanced leading to the opportunity for the new Weyburn Hospital to be built.

When asked

"I think there are a few candidates that you know who your not going to vote for," said Roy

"There is still time to think and listen to more of the debates."

Some of the questions posed may not be totally in our area but at the same time it gave us a very good view of the candidates as they are going across the province and we were very happy that we had one stop here for us to listen to them."

"It says a lot for the city, it says a lot for the area, it says a lot for the people that we have here."

"They see it as a very important stop for them to talk."

Mayor Roy mentioned how Tina Beaudry-Mellor one of the candidates, talked about the youth representative on City council and connecting it to youth retention in the province.

The final vote for Saskatchewan party leader and the next premier of the province is January 27th 2018.
