He has been an active member of the community since 1975, involved in what seems to be a little bit of everything. Now, Mal Barber can add Golden Spike Award recipient to the long list of achievements in his life. He was presented with the award Monday night at the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce President’s Dinner and AGM and was honoured to receive the award from the Chamber.

“It comes from the business people of town, of which I am one, and have been for many years, and I’ve spent many years working on the Chamber, and with the Chamber, and I value the Chamber very much and my relationship with it,” Barber said after the presentation. He served as president of the Chamber in the 80’s.

Barber has worked with a number of organizations in the community over the years. They include the Young Fellows, the Rotary Club, Weyburn Minor Baseball, and the Weyburn & District Hospital Foundation. Wendy Hoffart of Access Communications introduced Barber, and presented the award, and said to list all of his accomplishments would take the entire evening.

When asked where he gets the motivation to be as involved as he is in the community, Barber said it comes down to the rewards of volunteering.

“You’re giving something, but you get so much back by volunteering,” Barber shared. “Our community is one of the best communities in Canada, and anybody who lives here should be proud of it because we have so many people who do volunteer and create opportunities.”

Barber added that next for him is to continue to be involved in the community, doing what he can, where he can, and making it work.
