The Weyburn Salvation Army Food Bank is teaming up with Golden West Radio to help ensure everyone has enough in their pantry for the Christmas season. Today, AM1190, Magic 103 and Big 106 will be on location at Prairie Sky Co-op food store, collecting donations for the Food Bank as we try to Blow Away Hunger.

From 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., donations can be dropped off. When you drop off your donation, you can also enter for a chance to win a snowblower from Canadian Tire.

Jennifer Lorinczy is the Community Services Coordinator with the Salvation Army. She explained the Christmas season is one of giving, and you never know who will be on the receiving end of the generosity.

“You just take care of your own, right?” Lorinczy told BIG 106’s Dara Currie. “You never know who is accessing the food bank, or our services at the Salvation Army. It could be your neighbour, it could be your friend, it could be someone you know.”

The Christmas season is an integral time of year for the Salvation Army food bank. Quite often the donations made during this time of year dwarf what is received throughout the rest of the year, and it puts them into a position to be able to help families outside of the holidays.

This year, the food bank is looking for many of the staples they rely on for the year.

“Right now, things like peanut butter and rice, maybe some pasta and pasta sauces, things like maybe Hamburger Helper and Sidekicks to maybe tie a meal together,” Lorinczy said when asked what sort of foods they are looking for in particular. Items for school lunches for children are also in high demand throughout the year.
