The sixth annual 'Just Watch Me' contest is well underway and it offers a chance for entrepreneurs in Saskatchewan and Manitoba with disabilities to be recognized for their work in the business community.

"The Just Watch Me video contest it a celebration of rural entrepreneurs with health conditions or disabilities. We ask entrepreneurs to answer five quick questions by video and submit that video to us," said Susan Bater the program manager for entrepreneurs with disabilities.

The deadline for video submissions is fast approaching, with a firm cut off date of January 22. The judges then have a week to select four finalists, who will then have their videos voted on by the public to determine a winner.

The 'Just Watch Me' campaign isn't as much about competition, as it is about showcasing the wide array of talent and businesses on the prairies. Bater says a yearly award show would be ideal, but it's hard to accomplish with so many people spread out over the two provinces.

"We knew we had some really get stories — there are some amazing entrepreneurs out there and we really want to celebrate them," she said. "Video and technology gives us that opportunity to bridge some of those geographical barriers."

Bater added it's important that this group is acknowledged for their effort and contributions, as they can often be overlooked in the business world.

"We know that generally, people with disabilities and health conditions are under-employed. They're highly skilled people that often miss opportunities in the workforce," she explained. "Making their own business and creating their own destiny works really well."

Winners of the contest are rewarded quite handsomely. Some of the prizes include cash rewards, but also different sessions and training on how to further their business and entrepreneurial ideas.

"There's a real value in the prizes. Both in the monetary form of what they're worth, but also in helping to build and support that business, as well as that entrepreneur," she noted.

Past winners have had businesses including a recycling pick-up in Outlook, a photography company in Steinbach and a custom embroidery business for children and pets.

Bader invites entrepreneurs of all ages to pick up their phone or camera and shoot a submission. It doesn't have to be fancy or scripted, they just want to be able to share the amazing stories across Saskatchewan.
