New adventures await mountain biking enthusiasts in the Weyburn area, as there is a new rough trail to ride in the Tatagwa Parkway.

Dave Hodgkin with Weyburn Mountain Bikers said the paved trails aren't ideal for those who prefer to enjoy the all-terrain capacities of their bicycles.

"We decided to approach the City and see if we would be able to build trails in town, in our parks," he explained. "We got full support from the City."

Hodgkin met with Parks Coordinator Curtis Block and Leisure Services Director Andrew Crowe.

"We did a tour around and I showed them where I wanted to put [the trails] and they had no problems," he said.

One trail is ready, thanks to the help of volunteers in the community.

"One of the volunteers brought in a skid steer with a mower, so we were able to initially get started by mowing down where we wanted to put the trails, and a handful of us went in as well with whipper snippers and cleared the single track down to the ground."

"Now more than anything we need people to ride them," he invited.

Riders, said Hodgkin, will help compact the trail down, and the Weyburn Mountain Bikers group will smooth out any hazards that arise, such as trimming any branches, or removing any rocks that may be present but currently unseen. The club will also maintain the trail into the future.

According to Hodgkin, access to the trail can be found at the toboggan hill at River Park. The trail entrance is on your right, and you can follow the paved trail for 160 metres.

The future, in Hodgkin's dream, would mean blazing these kinds of trails all around Weyburn.

"It's going to a hundred per cent depend on the trail useage," he shared. "We got our first set built here and we'll see how much traffic we get through, and if we find they get used were going to keep building."
