For pedestrians, at times, crossing a road can make one nervous, with many drivers seeming unwilling to stop for them, even at crosswalks. But is it ever illegal to cross a road in Weyburn?

Weyburn's Chief of Police Marlo Pritchard explained that, since Weyburn has no specific jaywalking bylaw, the onus is on drivers to ensure they're not speeding and are watching for pedestrians. It's also on pedestrians to ensure they are visible to drivers.

“It’s both the driver of the vehicle and a pedestrian keeping their head on a swivel and being aware of their surroundings so we don’t have an accident,” said Prichard.

He added it's a very difficult law to enforce at any given time.

Those who grew up in Weyburn and took driver training were taught that in Weyburn, ‘pedestrians always have the right of way’. But can a pedestrian ever get a ticket for jaywalking in Weyburn?

“There is no ticket for jaywalking,” he said. “But in the seven years that I’ve been here, it hasn’t been a big issue.”

Under the Traffic Safety Act, a pedestrian can be charged for walking into the path of a vehicle when unsafe.

According to SGI, pedestrians also include persons in wheelchairs, motorized wheelchairs and medical scooters. SGI also recommends pedestrians walk facing oncoming traffic and must give motorists a chance to stop before attempting to cross.
